After German reunification, former citizens of East Germany gained the right to request the secret files once kept on them by the Ministry for State Security, commonly known as the Stasi. Inside gray folders, many found years of intimate reports: private jokes, dinner conversations, church meetings, travel hopes, arguments, friendships, and suspicions. Some learned that the state’s most effective surveillance device had been a coworker, neighbor, pastor, lover, spouse, or friend using a code name. This episode reconstructs how the Stasi became the shield and sword of the Socialist Unity Party, how it monitored East German society through employees, informants, opened mail, tapped phones, hidden microphones, covert searches, odor samples, psychological disruption, and political detention, and how citizens stopped the destruction of the records as the dictatorship collapsed in nineteen eighty-nine and nineteen ninety. The evidence comes from the surviving Stasi archive, official procedures, prison testimony, records of the Peaceful Revolution, post-reunification law, and historical research. The central question is not whether the Stasi watched every citizen at every moment. It did not. The deeper question is what happens when a government makes private trust politically dangerous.

Years later, former painters developed loose teeth, jaw destruction, anemia, fractures, tumors, and fatal radiation disease. Companies disputed the connection, challenged medical evidence, relied on legal deadlines, and delayed accountability while women including Grace Fryer, Mollie Maggia, Katherine Schaub, Edna Hussman, Quinta McDonald, Albina Larice, and Catherine Donohue fought for recognition. This episode follows the factory practice, the scientific investigations by Theodor Blum, Cecil Drinker, Harrison Martland, and others, the misdiagnoses and corporate resistance, the New Jersey settlement, and the Illinois compensation fight that helped reshape occupational-disease law. The central question is how much the companies knew, when they knew it, and why the women had to prove the danger after the radium was already inside their bones.

Britain answered the destruction with war. This episode reconstructs the trade imbalance that drew silver out of Britain, the colonial opium system that reversed that flow, the Qing debate over legalization versus suppression, and the confrontation between Lin Zexu, foreign merchants, and British superintendent Charles Elliot. It follows the First Opium War, the Treaty of Nanking, the rise of unequal treaties, the disputed Arrow incident, the Second Opium War, and the looting and burning of the Old Summer Palace. The evidence shows opium was central, but not alone: property claims, diplomatic status, legal jurisdiction, treaty ports, missionary access, and imperial strategy all shaped the conflict. The central question remains whether these wars can be understood as ordinary trade and diplomacy disputes when military force compelled Qing China to accept a treaty order built around the consequences of an illegal narcotics trade.
